William J. Hando

Bill was born February 1, 1941, in Wayne, Alberta, Canada. A graduate of Drumheller Senior High School, he married Carole in 1965. The couple has two children.
Bill’s career in the industry began in 1961 as a junior clerk at O.K. Economy Food Stores. In 1964 he joined Dominion Food Stores as a senior clerk and in 1965 moved to London Drugs Ltd. where he started as a stock clerk and worked his way up to merchandise manager for candy, food, soda and tobacco, the position held at the time of his induction.
Regarding his success, Bill credits London Drugs for being receptive to new ideas and categories and having the resources to facilitate change quickly. He acknowledges retired London Drugs COO Mark Nussbaum as having the biggest influence on his career. “He was the person at London Drugs that started to broaden the mix.”
For those coming into the industry, Bill offers the following advice: “Always try to learn or know what a consumer wants. Be aware of industry trends and don’t be afraid to try new things.”
