Sam Gleit
Class of 1999
Born in Europe on April 17, 1901, Sam Gleit immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900s. He married Gertrude in 1931 they raised three children; Morton, Howard and Penny.
During the 1920s, Sam started his own confectionery brokerage company, Samuel Gleit & Son – a name that lives on in the Eisman-Gleit Co. In a career that spanned 50 years, Sam was a member of National Confectionery Sales Association for 25 years and received a Candy Ambassador Award from the National Candy Wholesalers Association.
Sam is credited with many industry firsts, including the sale of the first Cella Chocolate Cherries outside of New York City. According to those who knew him, Sam was an aggressive man with a never say die attitude toward his life and work. There was never a time that Sam Gleit wasn’t fully prepared, in control and accurate with his information on a sales call, said one customer who knew him. He always knew what he was talking about.
