Roy Putze
Class of 2005
Roy hails from Richmond, VA, where he was born July 21, 1951. He attended Highland Springs High School. He married Emily in 1997. Roy has one daughter, Tiffany.
In 1968, he began a long career with Standard Drug Co., beginning as an assistant manager, followed by a promotion to store manager, and ending up a candy buyer.
He moved to selling in 1993 when he joined Shinnamon & Assoc. as a candy account manager. In 1995 he shifted to Advantage Sales & Marketing, which later became Premier Sales & Marketing, as an account manager. He was soon promoted to vice-president of alternative channels, the title he held at the time of his induction.
Roy credits up his success to the strong work ethic passed down to him by his parents and grandparents. He says that in his 25 years at Standard Drug, he never missed a day of work, and Roy’s suppliers note that when he takes a day off, he often spends the time performing store checks.
“Know your customer, your product and your manufacturers inside and out,” Roy recommends. “A buyer’s time is valuable, so study the industry, study your customers’ competitors and be flexible.”
Among his honors are an Outstanding Achievement Award and a Broker of the Year Award from The Warrell Corp.
When he’s not working, Roy enjoys collecting coins and currency, as well as antiques. He also collects memorabilia of his hometown and from the candy business.
