Roland was born May 4, 1942, in Gaston County, NC. He graduated from Stanley High School and was married on July 17, 1961 to Patsy. They raised three children; Russell, Kimberly and Abby.

In 1956, Roland started as manager of Roberts Supermarket in Stanley, NC. Seven years later, he joined Associated Brokers of Charlotte, NC as a sales representative, and in 1966, he moved to the Brock Candy Co, Inc. as a sales representative. By the end of the 1960s, he had joined J.A. Richardson Food Brokers, Inc. serving as vice-president of its confectionery division. In 1989, he was named vice-president/confectionery division at Atlas Marketing Inc. a position he held until his retirement in September 1995.

Throughout his candy career, Roland received many industry honors, including: Broker of the Year from Curtis Candy Inc.; a Broker of the Year Award from Andes Candies; and winning broker of the year awards on five separate occasions from Tootsie Roll Industries and Brock Candy Co. He also won multiple broker of the year awards from Farley Candy Inc. and Leaf, Inc.

Roland passed away February 1, 2007.
