R. Anthony Sweet
Class of 2006
Born January 1, 1942, in Salt Lake City, UT, Tony attended Stanford University, earning degrees in history and economics. Following college, he served six years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He has two children, Jeffrey and Rachel, and in 2003, he married Carol.
A third-generation family member of Sweet Candy Co., Tony became vice-president, manufacturing in 1970, and in 1981 he became president and CEO. Under his direction, the company enhanced its technology, plant and equipment and expanded distribution throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 2001, he became chairman of the company, a position he held at the time of his induction.
The best advice I can give, Tony says, is to maintain quality products with exemplary customer service, and live by the golden rule. He attributes much of his success to his grandfather and parents.
An active member of confectionery industry groups, Tony has served on both the board of directors and executive board of the National Confectioners Association. He also participated in the Western Candy Conference.
In April 2003, he was recognized as a Utah Trailblazer by local business organizations and Utah Business Magazine. He was honored as the Utah Manufacturers Association’s Business Executive of the Year in 2003.
Tony has served on several local community boards including the Westminster College Board of Trustees, the University of Utah National Advisory Board and the Salt Lake Boys and Girls Clubs. In his leisure time he enjoys flying, golf, skiing and reading.
