Marlene Stauffer
Class of 2024
Marlene Stauffer’s 42-year career has been marked by her passion for chocolate and her commitment to sharing her knowledge with others.
Born on September 15, 1959, in Grove City, PA, Marlene was raised on a dairy farm in a close-knit family, where her parents, James and Alice, emphasized the importance of hard work, humility, and community service.
These values were ingrained in Marlene, as she contributed to various farm tasks, including sweeping grain, unloading hay, and participating in 4-H projects. She excelled academically and participated in extracurricular activities including the marching band, where she played the tuba.
Upon graduating in 1977, she initially pursued a career in Computer Technology, attending a tech school in Pittsburgh. However, her agricultural roots drew her back to the food industry. Encouraged by family and friends, she enrolled in The Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a degree in Food Science.
In 1982, Marlene began her career at Blommer Chocolate Co. She says her initial attraction to the company was its family-oriented environment and its connection to the dairy industry through its milk chocolate production.
A devoted wife and mother, Marlene married Brook Stauffer on September 26, 1987. Together, they have two daughters, Jordan and Haley.
Over the years, Marlene has held various positions within Blommer, eventually rising to the role of Director of Regulatory Compliance before transitioning to her current position as a Chocolate Fellow. Her commitment to the company and the industry is evident in her long tenure and the significant impact she has had.
Throughout her career, Marlene has been active in industry associations, including the Professional Manufacturing Confectioners Association, where she made history as the first woman to serve as Vice President, President, and Chairman of the Board.
Her involvement also includes teaching courses for the Institute of Food Technologists and the American Association of Candy Technologists. She has served on various committees, presented at countless conferences on topics ranging from tempering chocolate and selecting coatings for moulding applications, to conquering shelf-life issues and women in STEM.
In recognition of her contributions, Marlene has received honors including the Marie Kelso Award in 2010, and the Stroud Jordan Award in 2015. This year she is being inducted into the Lakeview High School Academic Alumni Hall of Fame.
Away from work, Marlene spends time with her family, hiking, gardening, skiing, and caring for animals. She says she finds joy in activities such as hiking the Lemon Squeeze Crevice at Mohonk Mountain in New York State’s Hudson Valley.
Marlene’s philosophy — Be The Example — guides her interactions with others. Known for her quiet determination, and willingness to take on challenges, she inspires those around her.
