Lynn Wieland

Class of 2025

A native of Bryan, OH, Lynn Wieland has spent most of his life contributing to the city that shaped him, and in the process dedicating nearly four decades to a career in the confectionery industry.

Born January 9, 1965, Lynn’s upbringing shaped the values that guide him. Raised by Robert and Goldie Wieland, he remembers summers at the lake swimming, water skiing, and fishing with his siblings Laura and Mathew. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, and the importance of accountability. He also learned how to be a good sport with a sense of humor.

After graduating from high school in 1983, Lynn briefly attended The Ohio State University. During his first college summer break, he took a seasonal job at Spangler Candy Co. That summer changed his life in more ways than one when he met Theresa, a fellow intern who would become his wife.

The couple married in 1985 and raised two sons, Andrew and Austin. They are now proud grandparents to Ryann, Claire, Molly, Cooper, and Sullivan.

Lynn’s career at Spangler began on the production floor in 1985. He worked his way up in roles of increasing responsibility, in production and operations, leading to his current role as Vice President of Operations.

Except for a brief period at the L.E. Smith Co. from 2003 to 2006, Lynn has been a fixture at Spangler. He has also made contributions to the confectionery industry, including volunteering as a member of the Program Committee for the PMCA.

Since 2012, he has served in executive leadership roles for the AACT, supporting the organization for the past 11 years as Secretary for the National AACT Council as well as Chair of the Nominations Committee.

In 2023, Lynn received the AACT’s Stroud Jordan Award, recognizing his contributions to confectionery technology. He says he was humbled to be nominated and selected by his peers for this award.

Lynn recognizes Pat Hurley, Candy Hall of Fame Class of 2003, for helping him build a strong industry network and encouraging him to get involved. He also calls out Spangler leaders including Dean and Greg Spangler, Kirk Vashaw, Bill Martin, and Duane Fox for inspiring him throughout his career.

He points out he is particularly proud of the work he did in helping establish Spangler’s manufacturing operation in Mexico, successfully coaching team members despite a language barrier. He also values becoming an officer in the company, playing a role in acquisitions, and integrating new technologies.

Described by his peers as hard-working, loyal, and fair, Lynn wants to be remembered as someone who always tried to make things better.

Beyond the factory floor, Lynn has served on the Bryan City Council, the Board of Education, and the Williams County United Way. He also helped create the Bryan Alumni Community Family & Friends Concert.

Lynn tells us it’s important to teach people what to do and get out of their way, adding: “You can learn from every situation, regardless of whether you succeed or fail.”
