Alvin Hasenberg

Class of 1993

Al was director of publications of the NCSA and the executive secretary of the New York Candy Club at the time of his induction. Al spent nearly his entire business life in the candy industry.

After graduating from Rutgers University in 1939, he joined the U.S. Army and saw overseas service in the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. At the conclusion of the war, he was employed by Sweets Co. of America, which later became Tootsie Roll Industries. He then joined Drake America Corp. of New York, and was instrumental in the introduction of the Kit Kat bar to American consumers.

In 1956, Al began a 25-year association with what was then the Chunky Corp. Beginning as an assistant sales manager, Al became executive vice-president of the firm, which later became known as the Ward Candy Co.

In 1981, Ward Candy was sold and Al formed The Huxley Group, a consulting firm he operated up to his retirement in 1988.

Al received many honors in his long association with the industry. In 1965 he became the first recipient of the Silver Candy Dish Award from the National Candy Brokers Association and in 1975, won a Dean’s Award from the National Candy Wholesalers Association. He and his wife Estelle raised two children.
